Glamping at Glastonbury Festival has exploded in recent years in response to the growing demand from its lucky ticket holders. Whilst 5 days of camping is provided in the ticket price, the basic facilities, scramble for space and non-stop humdrum of the temporary city is forcing many to consider alternative accommodation options off-site. Glastonbury Festival’s off-site options alongside private operators now cater for approximately 20-25% of ticket holders. With luxury toilets and showers, pre-erected furnished tents, relative tranquility to recharge in and complimentary services it’s no wonder many are choosing this added extra.

Location of glamping sites

The Glastonbury Festival site is so vast it is not uncommon to hear guests state their number of daily steps in the tens of thousands, and is perhaps why location scores so highly in the requirements of our enquiries. What strikes me, and this is true of Love Fields too, is that most sites advertise on the basis of distance to the nearest Pedestrian Gate or the duration of the shuttle bus to the site. What soon becomes clear from the data I collected is that this only tells part of the story and isn’t particularly informative to those looking in from the outside. I’m acutely aware that I’m not the most independent source here, but it’s pretty easy to be objective when we’re simply calculating the distance (m) between Point A and Point B and combining that with a walking speed (3km/hr) which is stated. All other assumptions have been stated below. I went into this with intrigue and hopefully something informative for you has resulted from it.

how its calculated

  1. Selected a sample of campsites that use one of the four main pedestrian gates (A-D). Min 3 per gate.

  2. I simply measured the walking distance between the campsite entrance to the nearest Pedestrian Gate.

  3. Where a shuttle bus is offered: I used the advertised shuttle time + 10 mins + distance from Bronze Gate to Pedestrian Gate A.

  4. I then divided the site into a quadrant; SW, SE, NW, NE and a Central Point. I measured the distance from each point (major stage in that quadrant) to each Pedestrian Gate.

  5. Added the total distances together and calculated the time assuming a walking pace of 3km/hour. The results indicate a one-way journey.

Conclusions

  • Firstly, location is only one part of the equation, budgets, type of accommodation and particular requirements may be more influential to your choice of campsite.

  • The shuttle bus on first glance appears to be a benefit, but the added walk from Bronze Gate and the location of Gate A relative to the stages consistently scores these campsites poorly.

  • Think about where you will be spending most time whilst on-site, choosing a campsite closest to this area can save you several hours (and energy) over the week. This would also apply if you decide to camp on-site.

  • Be realistic, off-site campsites may not be close enough to ‘pop back to’ especially if you have children or mobility concerns. Weigh this against the benefits of glamping to reach an informed choice.
